Zika virus and dengue virus are two arthropod-borne pathogenic flaviviruses that co-circulate in several countries. We'll explore some of the factors that influence ZIKV evolution by repeating serial passaging of ZIKV through cultured mosquito cells and either DENV-naive or DENV-immune mice to simulate the natural transmission cycle. To understand some of the pressures that influence ZIKV evolution, we simulate the natural transmission cycle by growing ZIKV cultured mosquito cells and either DENV-naive or DENV-immune mice. In DENV-naive or -immune settings, ZIKV strains with increased transmissibility and pathogenicity can develop, according to our results, and NS2B-I39 mutants may represent ZIKV variants of concern.
