On the use of contingent valuation method to assess factors affecting the contribution of local people for the management of water hyacinth in Lake Tana, northwestern Ethiopia

The colonization of freshwater lakes by invasive alien species is particularly alarming due to increased nutrient levels from the watersheds. The upstream local community's watershed protection efforts are considered to be effective ways to minimize nutrient loading to the receiving water bodies and thus avoid the propagation of water hyacinth. In Lake Tana, the aim of this report is to determine the preferences and contributions of the local community in terms of water hyacinth management. To gather data from 560 randomly selected households, a contingent valuation method for a hypothetical market u201cprevention of water hyacinth infestation of Lake Tana by a watershed management scheme was used. The findings revealed by this report show community preferences, providing context for informed and evidence-based decision making regarding the prevention of weed proliferation and sustainable use of ecosystem services.

Forest planning tools properly account for the investments required to maintain forests, but not for compensation, because they only include market ES but not non-market ones. This report seeks to determine the financial balance for five Spanish forests, incorporating real operating and maintenance costs, as well as benefits from both market ES and non-market ES. Due to the former's recreational use of the land, it would be more effective in public forests than in private ones, with a difference between 130-u2013938 and 100b7year in the overall economic balance of all ES. Valuation of ES is a useful tool to illustrate the benefits of forest ecosystems and the need to maintain them.
