"Aerobic energy needs have contributed to the evolution of complicated mitochondrial reticula in highly oxidative muscles, but the extent to which metabolic challenges can be addressed with evolutionary changes in the physiology of specific mitochondrial fractions remains unsolved. " We investigated mitochondrial pathways that could have contributed to aerobic fitness in deer mice that were accustomed to the hypoxic environment at a high altitude. When compared to low-altitude mice across environments, high-altitude mice had greater yield, respiratory capacity for oxidative phosphorylation, and O2 affinity, but there were no species differences in these characteristics in intermyofibrillar mitochondria. In both mitochondrial fractions, high-altitude mice had increased capabilities of complex II as a result of complexes I + II and higher succinate dehydrogenase activity. Functional changes in subsarcolemmal mitochondria may have contributed to improved aerobic endurance in hypoxia in hypoxia in high-altitude deer mice, according to our findings.

Targeted proteomics of appendicular skeletal muscle mass and handgrip strength in black South Africans: a cross-sectional study.
