FogROS 2: An Adaptive and Extensible Platform for Cloud and Fog Robotics Using ROS 2

Robots are often found that robots lack the computational horsepower on board to operate modern robot algorithms at desired rates because of their size, capability, and price points. " We present FogROS 2, an easy-to-use, open-source platform that can be used to build cloud and fog robotics that are compatible with the upcoming ROS 2 standard, expanding the open-source Robot Operating System. FogROS 2 delivers a cloud computer, deploys and launches ROS 2 nodes to the cloud computer, establishes safe connectivity between the robot and cloud, and starts running the application. We show in example applications that using cloud computing can help overcome network latency to greatly accelerate robot results. FogROS 2 reduces SLAM latency by 50%, reduces grasp planning time from 14s to 1. 2 seconds, and speeds up motion planning 28x in examples. FogROS 2 reduces network utilization by up to 3. 8 percent when compared to alternatives.

RobotCore: An Open Architecture for Hardware Acceleration in ROS 2
