Protons and ions: The general goal of radiation therapy is to raise the therapeutic index by creating a physical dose difference between tumors and normal tissues by precision dose targeting, image processing, and high radiation beams that provide radiation dose with high conformity, e. g. , protons, and ions. However, normal tissue radiation toxicity is also restricted to therapy and cure, with many patients suffering acute and long-term side effects. Also, a fundamentally different model for raising the therapeutic index of radiation therapy has emerged, backed by preclinical study, and based on the FLASH radiation effect. FLASH radiation therapy is ultra-high dose-rate delivery of a therapeutic radiation dose in a fraction of a second. With novel and compact accelerators, the accelerator community has a huge opportunity, but also many technological challenges, to ensure the safe delivery of FLASH radiation beams.
