Association of serum retinol concentration with normal-tension glaucoma

Objectives: To determine the relationship between serum retinol levels and normal-tension glaucoma, you should investigate. Methods In a prospective cross-sectional study, 345 subjects with NTG, 106 patients with high-pressure primary open-angle glaucoma, and 138 healthy control subjects were recruited. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry determined the concentration of retinol in fasting blood samples. Patients in NTG had lower serum retinol levels than placebo or healthy controls, despite improved POAG or healthy controls. Serum retinol concentrations lower than 300 ng/mL were found in a higher proportion of NTG patients than POAG or controls. Serum retinol was positively correlated with optical nerve sheath diameter in glaucoma patients and was not linked to any other demographic or ophthalmic biometric characteristics in the NTG patients. NTG patients had lower serum retinol levels, which was disappointing. Serum retinol, which has been closely associated with NTG, makes it a new promising treatment and treatment option for the disease's diagnosis and treatment.
