OSM Data Import as an Outreach Tool to Trigger Community Growth? A Case Study in Miami

If and just how an OpenStreetMap data import task can contribute to OSM community development, this paper presents the outcomes of a research study that discovered. Different outreach techniques were utilized to introduce a building import task to three targeted OSM customer groups. Existing OSM members were spoken to and asked to sign up with the data import project. Second, a number of regional community events were organized with Maptime Miami to involve local mapmakers in OSM contribution tasks. The paper analyzes spatio-temporal customer contributions of these target groups to evaluate the effectiveness of the different outreach techniques for recruitment and retention of OSM contributors. Generally, we found that an OSM data import job can add useful data to the map, yet that encouraging long-term interaction of new users, whether it be within the academic environment or outside, verified to be tough.
