A Comparison of Pre-Emptive Co-Amoxiclav, Postoperative Amoxicillin, and Metronidazole for Prevention of Postoperative Complications in Dentoalveolar Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

In the preoperative co-amoxiclav plus postoperative metronidazole group, fifteen patients were in the preoperative co-amoxiclav plus postoperative amoxicillin group and fifteen in the preoperative co-amoxiclav plus postoperative amoxicillin group. When compared to the co-amoxiclav group at 5 days post-operation, there was no significant decrease in the number of patients with acute alveolar osteitis or infection for co-amoxiclav plus metronidazole and co-amoxiclav plus amoxicillin groups. Compared to co-amoxiclav and amoxicillin, metronidazole was more effective in shielding the extracted tooth socket from alosteitis. In addition, there were significant decreases in mean pain scores 5 days post-operative, relative to the pain levels immediately after surgery. By injection followed by in situ gelation, the new study sought to develop and analyze a new hydrogel system for delivery of the antibiotic drug metronidazole directly into the periodontal pocket. The study concentrated on the effects of the hydrogel's formulation parameters on the drug release profile and the hydrogel's physical and mechanical properties. These hydrogels had a decreasing release rate with time, with the majority of the drug eluted within 24 h, indicating that they are highly biocompatible. Significant changes in the physical properties and minor changes in the mechanical properties were obtained by increasing the gelatin concentration without changing the crosslinker concentration.
