Beyond-the-Meter: Unaccounted Sources of Methane Emissions in the Natural Gas Distribution Sector

An inventory of greenhouse gas emissions created by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change is maintained by the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. As NG is a larger share of the nation's energy sources, it is ever more critical to assess the CH4 emissions survey. However, the national CH4 database does not include all potential sources of CH 4 leaks, adding to confusion in the national CH4 database. Discrepancies between top-down and bottom-up inventories of CH 4 emissions suggest that there are significant unaccounted for sources of CH 4 leaks, especially in cities. We estimate that residential homes and appliances in the United States will export 9. 1 Gg CH 4 annually, accounting for more than 2% of the CH 4 released from the NG industry, combining results from whole house emissions and steady-state operation of appliances.
