Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9: a proximal biomarker for cardiac remodeling and a distal biomarker for inflammation.

A common cause of congestive heart failure is adverse cardiac remodeling following myocardial infarction. Both animal models and clinical studies have shown that Matrix metalloproteinase is a potential biomarker for cardiac remodeling. MMP-9 expression in animal MI models has risen significantly and is correlated with inflammation, diabetic microvascular disease, extracellular matrix degradation, and cardiac dysfunction. MMP-9 has also established a correlation between MMP-9 and post-MI remodeling and mortality, making MMP-9 a good candidate to add to the multiple biomarker list. By definition, a proximal biomarker has a close link to its target disease, while a distal biomarker has non-targeted disease-modifying results. We explore the possibility of MMP-9 to act as both a proximal biomarker for cardiac remodeling and a distal biomarker for inflammation in this report. We summarized the most recent molecular foundation and clinical platform that allow us to include MMP-9 as a biomarker in both categories.
