According to the authors, the authors sought to discover metabolic differences between GBM tumor core cells and edge cells, and, in so doing, elucidate novel actionable therapeutic targets focusing on tumor metabolism. METHODS A comprehensive metabolic review was done on 20 high-grade glioma tissues and 30 glioma-initiating cell culture models. GBM tumor tissue obtained from within the contrast-enhancing region and those from the perceptumoral brain lesions were tested and explored. RESULTS Metabolic heterogeneity in both HGG tumor tissues and GBM sphere culture models was found, and reports suggested that tyrosine metabolism may be a potential therapeutic target in GBM, especially in the tumor core. In addition, the reported therapeutic difficulties of the GBM core were influenced by the enzyme tyrosine aminotransferase inside the tyrosine metabolic pathway. CONCLUSIONS The tyrosine metabolism pathway may be particularly useful as an adjuvant to multimodal GBM therapies.
