Immunostimulatory oncolytic activity of coxsackievirus A11 in human malignant pleural mesothelioma

Abstract Malignant pleural mesothelioma is a tough solid cancer with a poor prognosis, but Coxsackievirus A11 is a potential oncolytic virus for cancer therapy. In all six MPM cell lines tested, the virus was cytotoxic and showed no or minimal cytotoxicity toward normal human normal cell lines. Notably, in vivo therapy of human MPM xenografts with intratumoral CVA11 injection resulted in significant reduction of tumor formation in SCID mice, but no change was observed in body weight, although mice infected with CVA11 did not change much. CVA11's oncolytic activity for MPM is linked to ICAMu20101 as a virus receptor, as well as Akt and ERK signaling, and that oncolytic virotherapy with CVA11 is a promising treatment modality with immunostimulatory activity for human MPM, as well as Akt and ERK signaling.
