"How much desire should I have?": a qualitative study of low libido in postmenopausal women.

To better understand the role that it plays in their lives, we conducted 15 interviews and three focus groups among women 60 and older with low libido. First, women reported that sex was a significant part of their lives. Women were thirdly insecure by low libido, fearing that it could have negative effects on marital relationships and self-image, as well as negatively affecting sexual intimacy and self-image.

Testosterone-induced increase in libido in a patient with a loss-of-function mutation in the AR gene.

We have a 26-year-old patient with CAIS who underwent gonadectomy, followed by a dramatic decline in libido, which was improved with testosterone therapy but not with estradiol. This patient had a previously unknown start loss mutation in the androgen receptor that was not previously reported. This unique CAIS case and extensive clinical review raises troubling questions regarding the relative roles of testosterone and estrogen in libido, as well as the potential non-genomic actions of androgens.
