Elevated Urinary Arginine Vasopressin Concentrations during Preeclamptic Pregnancies do not Persist Postpartum

"Because copeptin and vapingin are classified in a 1:1 molar ratio, copeptin and vasopressin measurements can be used as a surrogate measure of vaping. " Long before PreeE can be clinically diagnosed, our lab has previously demonstrated that vasopressin, as measured by copeptin, is elevated in plasma and urine in preeclamptic pregnancies. However, it is also unknown if urine vasopressin is elevated consistently postpartum. At 1:u20104 years postpartum, our aim was to see if there is a difference in copeptin concentration between women with and those without a history of preeclampsia. We hypothesized that AVP concentrations of patients with a PreE diagnosis would persist to be elevated postpartum. Women fasted, did not smoke, and did not have caffeine for four hours before their study visit, neither did they drink alcohol or exercise for the first 24 hours. Urine samples were assayed for copeptin concentrations by an automated immunoassay, creatinine concentrations via a QuantiChrom assay, total protein concentrations by freezing point depression, and specific gravity using a hydrometer. In the postpartum period between women with vs. those without a history of preeclampsia, there was no statistically significant difference in urine copeptin, a marker of AVP. In women with no apparent hypertension diagnosis or those being treated for hypertension, no significant differences in copeptin were found in women without a current hypertension diagnosis or those treated for hypertension. After a preeclamptic pregnancy, this report shows that copeptin, a survivor of AVP, is not consistently elevated in urine after a preeclamptic pregnancy.
