Sugar content in infant formula: Accuracy of labeling and conformity to guidelines.

In commercially available infant formulae in the UAE, Aim To determine the amount and type of dietary sugars in commercially available infant formulae. In 71 separate brands of commercially available infant formulaes in the UAE, design Sucrose, glucose, and fructose were measured. Sugar values were compared to the reported amounts on the nutritional labels and were compared to the reported ones. Sugars contributed to more than 5% of total energy intake, ranging from 5. 6 percent to 27. 0 percent. On the labels, all infant formula packages had carbohydrate values listed, but very few discussed the added sugar content. Conclusions: Many infant formula products tested contained sugars that were higher than the recommended intake. Tighter guidelines that track the amount of sugar in infant formulae and recommendations for comprehensive labeling schemes are needed.
