Here we examine the cell wall structure of a fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus and four mutants depleted of key structural polysaccharides. A rigid core was found by chitin, -1,3-glucan, and -1,3-glucan, with galactosaminogistan and galactomannan present in the cell phase, according to the mobile phase, with galactogactan and galactomannan present. The distribution of -1,3-glucan in chemically isolated and dynamically distinct domains contributes to its functional diversity. We recommend a new model of cell wall architecture that may aid our knowledge of fungal pathogens' physical response to stresses.
