Fluoxetine exposure during adolescence increases preference for cocaine in adulthood

For 15 days, either during adolescence or adulthood, separate groups of male c57bl/6 mice were exposed to FLX for 15 days in a row. Eight days after FLX therapy, psychological response to cocaine conditioned place preference was evaluated. When compared to age-matched saline pretreated controls, mice treated with FLX during adolescence but not during adulthood show an elevated dose-dependent preference to the environment paired with cocaine.

Transgenerational hypocortisolism and behavioral disruption are induced by the antidepressant fluoxetine in male zebrafish Danio rerio

Hypocortisolism has been present in at least three generations since we first noticed that a 6-day FLX exposure during early zebrafish growth caused hypocortisolism. In the descendants of the third generation's gene expression study, pathways governing cortisol synthesis have been altered in the descendants. This is an important example of how, in an animal model, even a brief ancestral exposure to a common depressant enhances stress response and critical coping behaviors for many generations.
