Transgenerational hypocortisolism and behavioral disruption are induced by the antidepressant fluoxetine in male zebrafish Danio rerio

Hypocortisolism has been present in at least three generations since we first noticed that a 6-day FLX exposure during early zebrafish growth caused hypocortisolism. In the descendants of the third generation's gene expression study, pathways governing cortisol synthesis have been altered in the descendants. This is an important example of how, in an animal model, even a brief ancestral exposure to a common depressant enhances stress response and critical coping behaviors for many generations.
