Sulfur dioxide emissions curbing effects and influencing mechanisms of China's emission trading system.

In this context, based on panel data from 285 Chinese cities from 2004 to 2018, this paper investigates the effect of the pollution control system's changes on sulfur dioxide emissions of China and the transmission mechanism. According to Mechanistic studies, the emissions trading scheme can effectively reduce sulfur dioxide pollution by reducing government involvement, stimulating green patent development, and increasing resource use efficiency, in which green utility patents have a masking effect. In old and non-old industrial base cities in industrial base zoning, the emissions trading scheme has a significant reduction of sulfur dioxide emissions. The suppression in non-old industrial base cities is greater than that in old industrial base cities.
