Using the modified Schirmer test for dry mouth assessment: A cross-sectional study.

This study was designed to determine whether the updated Schirmer test could be used as a diagnostic tool for dry mouth, i. e. whether it could accurately measure salivary film at certain locations within the oral cavity, as well as identify pH sensitivity/specificity and establish reference values. With individual sensitivity/specificity values dependent on test location/time points, a statistically valid discriminatory value for the unstimulated salivary flow rates of the palate, buccal mucosa, mouth floor, and tongue might be displayed.
