The effect of demographic characteristics on the relationship between smoking and dry mouth in Iran: a cross-sectional, case-control study

METHODS: This case-control investigation included 5,640 randomly selected participants from the second phase of the Kerman Coronary Disease Risk Factors Study, which attracted 10,000 participants from 2014 to 2018. Each participant completed a six-item Fox questionnaire to determine dry mouth as a dependent variable. As males grew older, the likelihood of developing dry mouth increased more frequently than among female smokers. In addition, female smokers were more likely to have dry mouth than male smokers, with a sex indetermination. CONCLUSIONS: In addition, female smokers were more likely to have dry mouth than male smokers. Female smokers were more likely to have dry throat, and its incidence increased with age in daily smokers of both sexes, but more quickly in males.

AB0422 SODIUM BICARBONATE MOUTH RINSE IS A USEFUL SELF-CARE METHOD FOR DRY MOUTH IN PATIENTS WITH SJÖGREN’S SYNDROME

Patients with Sju00f6gren'u2019s syndrome have various signs that may be related to dry mouth. One of the physiological effects of saliva is buffering, and salivary bicarbonate is the key determinant of salivary buffering capacity. Patients with dry mouth suffer a significant amount of dental caries and oral candidiasis, and salivary buffering capacity, and oral pH decrease in patients with dry mouth; this is closely related to the onset of dental caries and oral candidiasis. It is believed that sodium bicarbonate mouth rinse is safe for relieving these intraoral disorders. SS patients need to investigate the usability and changes in symptoms related to dry mouth. Biological Studies Methods The patients were 27 SS patients who had used sodium bicarbonate mouth rinse. More than half of the patients had no idea of sodium bicarbonate mouth rinse. Patients with dry mouth had relief from symptoms related to dry mouth. Effects of sodium bicarbonate have been documented as follows: in addition to the reduction of dental caries and oral candidiasis, deletion of tongue plaque, and a refreshing feeling in the mouth after rinsing due to its mucolytic activity, the reduction of halitosis-causing volatile sulfur compounds, and increase of gingivitis. However, studies into the effects of sodium bicarbonate on dry mouth in SS patients are limited. These results show that sodium bicarbonate mouth rinse is a safe self-care device that can compensate for the salivary buffering capacity that is missing in SS patients and may reduce dry mouth symptoms.

A nonconventional approach to prevent mouth dryness in a patient with a complex maxillofacial defect

This paper discusses prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with dry mouth as a result of a complex maxillofacial abnormality. The patient had undergone five surgical procedures as a result of repeated recurrence pleomorphic adenoma, which resulted in partial maxillectomy followed by complete maxillectomy, and finally orbital resection. With and without the blanket, the patient's speech and sleep quality was assessed, and the patient's oral hygiene was found to improve with use of the kit. Many facial abnormalities can be used with a silicone facial cover instead of a conventional prosthesis, providing a satisfactory result and being one of the options for preventing mouth dryness in patients with multiple facial abnormalities.

Dry Mouth

However, a lack of saliva and a report of u201cdry mouthu201d may be the result of several causes. Thus, it becomes important to determine the source of a dry mouth rash and the severity of salivary dysfunction. With this knowledge, personalized preventive steps can be quickly implemented to reduce symptoms and to minimize the effects of dry mouth on the oral cavity.
