COcoa Supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study

The COCoA supplement and Multivitamin Outcomes Study is a controlled clinical trial of cocoa extract supplement and a standard multivitamin supplement to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer among women aged 65 years and older, as well as men aged 60 years and older. Although the COSMOS trial's actual cocoa flavanol content remained unchanged throughout the trial, the application of this new analytical technique has resulted in anticipated changes in how the total cocoa flavanol content is now reported. Participants in COSMOS included female survivors; non-randomized respondents to national invitational mailings for the VITAMIN D and OmegA-3 TriaL; respondents to national invitational mailings to age-eligible adults; and volunteers who learned about the trial either through the media or through ResearchMatch. org, an electronic recruiting portal. Diet or Additional Supplement to Increase Potassium Intake: An Adaptive Clinical Trial

High blood pressure is the most common cause of cardiovascular disease worldwide, including in Canada. With increasing and elderly populations, the prevalence of high blood pressure is gradually increasing. Patients, the preference amongst patients has remained unchanged in a recent Hypertension Canada study for more research into how to monitor blood pressure without tablets or lowering the burden of taking many pills to reduce high blood pressure is evident. Despite a lot of attention has been placed on sodium intake in the public health care profession, young Canadians' average potassium intake is woefully poor. Increased potassium intake, whether diet or as supplements, has reduced blood pressure, and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, such as stroke, according to excellent results in the published study. Participants with elevated blood pressure and established low potassium intake will be given individually tailored diet guidance during the first stage, which is complemented by weekly phone/email assistance. If an increase in potassium intake does not occur at four weeks, patients will be given an additional potassium supplement. The findings of the study will help determine the most cost-effective way of raising potassium intake, thus lowering blood pressure, the need for blood pressure lowering drugs, and possibly increasing participant satisfaction at the same time. The new recommendations recommend that changes in diet to raise potassium intake, so the two stage design would only include supplements if the most rigorous dietary advice does not work.

Oral Nutritional Supplementation With HMB Enhance Muscle Quality in Sarcopenic Surgical Patients (HEROS) - a Pilot Interventional Cohort Study

Following surgery, some patients will recover faster after surgery, with some patients never returning to baseline function after surgery. To minimize morbidity and mortality, it is, therefore, vital to optimize patients with sarcopenia prior to surgery. Hypotheses: After 2-4 weeks of pre-treatment, the research group hypothesizes that Ensure Plus Advance + HMB would minimize the number of IMAT in sarocpaenic patients. Even if biochemical measurements do not show a significant improvement, choosing Ensure Plus Advance + HMB will also improve functional parameters after post-habilitation, so make sure a similar QoL 1-month post-surgery. Methods: The investigators will be doing a pilot experiment with an institution with a well-established prehabilitation program to see the benefits of using a high protein, high calorie oral nutritional supplement with HMB, used in sarcopenic patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery using a machine with Automated Intelligence.

A Pilot Study of Dietary Supplementation With Branched Chain Amino Acids on Sleep

Following TBI, bone restitution and cognitive function are restored by dietary BCAA supplementation, according to preclinical studies, which supports normal sleep-wake patterns and cognitive function. Supplementation by BCAA has been studied extensively in healthy humans and in a variety of disease states, including following TBI, but not yet in Veterans in the chronic phase of recovery from TBI. Subjects will be randomly assigned in a double-blind fashion from the VA Research Pharmacy to one of three organizations: 1 BCAA; 60 g/day in two 30 g doses; 60 g/day in two 30 g doses; and 3 placebo; 60 g microcrystalline cellulose in two 30 g doses; 60 g in two 30 g doses; 60 g/day in two 30 g doses; 60 g/day in two 30 g dos Veterans will be encouraged to consume research product after awakening and 6 hours later, on an empty stomach for a period of up to 21 days. Pressure pain testing will be carried out before and after the experimental period.
