Resolving complex cartilage structures in developmental biology via deep learning-based automatic segmentation of X-ray computed microtomography images

"Abstract" is the product of embryonic cartilage's complex shape, which poses a significant barrier to phenotyping and basic knowledge of skeletal development. Using a unique manually annotated database, we recommend a CNN-based segmentation scheme optimised for the large image size that we generated using a unique manually annotated database. From approximately 8 h required for manual segmentation to just 130 s per sample, the time needed for segmentation of new samples slowed from 8 h to just 130 s per sample. This will greatly contribute to the throughput of u03bcCT-based analysis of cartilaginous skeletal elements in animal models of developmental diseases. ".
