Different surfactants can interact differently with the cell membrane, resulting in different degrees of cytotoxicity, due to different molecular structure, charge, and degree of lipophilicity. Even at low concentrations, CTAB-SLNs were highly cytotoxic, with cationic lipids used in SLN manufacture having a large effect on the particle's cytotoxic profile, according to the study, with cytotoxic lipids used in SLN manufacture strongly influencing the particles' cytotoxic profile. This is the first study to compare the cytotoxic profiles of CTAB-SLNs and DDAB-SLNs based on the same size and time of exposure, using different cell lines, and to the best of our knowledge. To the highest of our knowledge, this is the first study that compares the cytotoxic profile of CTAB-SLNs and DDAB-SLNs based on the time of exposure. Regardless of the drug delivery method, not only the cytotoxicity of the drug-loaded nanoparticles should be investigated, but also the empty nanoparticles as their surface properties play a significant role both in vitro and in vivo.
