Dynamic behaviour of interphases and its implication on high-energy-density cathode materials in lithium-ion batteries

Battery usage of several high-density cathode compounds in practical lithium-ion batteries is restricted by unie electrode–electrolyte interactions. A cathode-electrolyte interphase, which was initially developed on carbon black with no electrochemical bias, quickly passivates the cathode particles by mutual exchange of surface species, according to a region-of-interest specific secondary-ion mass spectrometry. Our findings, on the initiation and evolution of cathode interphases in lithium-based batteries, also provide insight into the origins and evolution of cathode interphases, supporting the development of in situ surface shields of high-density cathode materials in lithium-based batteries.
