The authors investigated the use of electrodiagnostic testing at the University of Virginia by reviewing the Electromyography Laboratory's data for the calendar year 1994. During that time, studies in patients with CTS accounted for 15% of the 1626 studies published. There was a strong referral bias on the part of the primary care physicians, and the prevalence of mononeuropathy in the patients they referred to was much higher than that in patients referred to specialists.
