Cross-sectional analysis of the association of periodontitis with carotid intima media thickness and atherosclerotic plaque in the Hamburg City health study.

Background: Previous epidemiological studies on the correlation between chronic periodontitis and carotid intima-media thickness and subclinical atherosclerosis have been inconclusive. Objective In a large population-based cohort study done in northern Germany, the aim of this research was to determine whether CP is related to subcutaneous atherosclerosis. Methods derived from 5781 participants of the Hamburg City Health Study, who were tested for complete oral health and carotid ultrasound findings, along with complete ultrasound results. With measurements of carotid intima-media thickness and atherosclerotic plaques, a standard duplex sonography of the carotid artery was carried out. In bivariate analyses, moderate and severe CP were associated with the prevalence of cIMT u22651 1 mm and mean cIMT. In addition, elevated prevalence of carotid atherosclerotic plaques was found in patients with moderate to moderate CP. Conclusions In this study, severe CP was associated with elevated cIMT and a higher risk of carotid plaques independent of common risk factors.
