The abrupt cessation of in-person education as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic has made it difficult for preclerkship students to consider a career in surgery. Lower CDDQ scores from an in-person SEAD program were used to assess the latter indirectly, in a case where lower CDDQ scores indicate less difficulty with CDM. Participants from the University of Ottawa's Forty pre-clerkship program rated the program as fair or excellent, according to 97 percent of participants. Following the program, participants' scores on knowledge-based questions about a surgical career soared significantly. Overall mean CDDQ scores decreased significantly following the scheme, which indicates reduced CDM challenges. Except for one subcategory, the difference in mean CDDQ scores between the virtual and in-person programs was not significantly different. Following the virtualization program, the change in CDDQ scores suggests that it may help with career decision-making challenges in the short run.
