Relevance of the person-environment fit approach to career assessment in South Africa – A review

Despite concerns regarding its accuracy, the person-environment fit approach to career counselling assessment remains a common one in the South African context. This narrative review sought to summarize literature regarding the benefits of the person-environment fit approach to career counselling assessment in South Africa and alternatives to this strategy. The following topics and subthemes were discovered during literature's analysis: the questionable rigour of the person-environment approach and alternative paths of career counselling assessment in this setting. According to the person-environment fit model, an integrated quantitative-qualitative approach to career counselling assessment could be a viable alternative to the person-environment fit strategy. However, further research and analysis into the person-environment fit theory and other career counselling assessment methods is required in order to move toward a more relevant career counselling assessment method in South Africa.

Adults changing careers through university education: Making meaning of quantitative career assessment scores through an integrative structured interview

Career psychologists are in a good spot to support adult career transitions. This qualitative, exploratory, multiple case study design, analysis, and analysis of two adult university students: an Australian male undergraduate and a South African female student are the subject of this qualitative, exploratory, multi case study. The results show that narrative career counselling can be helpful to adult career transitions and that the ISI could be a model for career psychologists who support them. Managers and human resource employees in organizations, according to the results' implications, may be able to support adult career transitions by providing them with emotional assistance that depends on quantitative career analysis as a foundation for career story telling. Contribution or value-add: The study finds an innovative response to career psychology's challenges to provide contemporary responses to various client groups and integrate career assessment with narrative career counselling.
