Abstract 300: Oral Administration of Lentil Extracts Attenuated Angiotensin Ii-induced Cardiac Hypertrophy and Hypertension in Normotensive Rats

Using an osmotic minipump, subcutaneous infusion of Ang II has resulted in a rise in blood pressure measured using telemetry in conscious rats. The heart and kidney were found to have significant cardiac hypertrophy, perivascular fibrosis, and histological examination. We investigated the effect of lentil extracts on cultured cardiomyocytes to see whether the protective effect of lentil extracts on cardiac hypertrophy is mediated by blood pressure attenuation or specifically acting on the cardiomyocytes. Cell size increases were significantly reduced after pretreatment of cardiomyocytes with cooked or raw lentil extract, according to the study. In addition, these lentil extracts reduced Ang II-induced rises in the ROS levels in cardiomyocytes. A direct effect on Ang II-induced cardiac hypertrophy can be mediated by a reduction of oxidative stress in cardiac tissue.
