Ordinary Portland cement is the main hydraulic building material, with the manufacture of which being a major source of carbon dioxide. However, there is an important information gap regarding the tenability of CSA buildings in terms of reinforcement corrosion. This work investigates the corrosion behavior of plain carbon steel in media of a fixed and variable composition that mimics fresh CSA-based materials at different stages of binder hydration. Sulfate-induced corrosion of mild steel begins at early stages of hydration in pure CSA and blended CSA-OPC binders, according to the results of electrochemical and nonelectrochemical methods.

A Comparative Study on Corrosion Rate of Carbon Steel in NaCl Solution with Continuous and Discontinuous Weight Loss Methods

Correlation rate as determined by the electrochemical or weight-loss methods is a commonly used corrosion indicator. The weight loss techniques can be measured continuously or intermittently, depending on sample conditions and the experimental design. But what sets apart the measurement technique is whether they produce the same corrosion rate value or not. This research intends to investigate the corrosion rate with a reliable and non-continuous measurement method of weight loss using carbon steel specimens immersed in sodium chloride solution and then compare the two results. There is no significant difference between the three treatment samples immersed for ten to fifty days in distilled water, 2 and 3% sodium chloride solution.
