Advanced nanoscale characterization of aluminum nanoparticles with modified surface morphology via atmospheric helium and carbon monoxide plasmas

This work investigates the possibility of manufacturing reactive core/shell nAl with thinned oxide shells and modified surface coatings as a result of a two-step atmospheric plasma surface treatment procedure in a custom dielectric barrier discharge plasma reactor. For various lengths, the commercial nAl of nominal average size comparable to 40-60nm was first treated with helium and then He/carbon monoxide plasmas. The presence of carbonaceous materials was found on the nAl surface evenly distributed, suggesting either its amorphous form or is present at a level insufficient to produce satisfactory EELS spectra, although no carbon-associated structure appeared in electron energy loss spectroscopy spectra. Carbonaceous materials only existed on the surface, and they were most likely carboxylates that increased with increased He/CO treatment duration, as shown by FTIR results.

The Measurement of Air Pollution from Satellites unit has been used to analyze carbon monoxide mixing ratios in the middle troposphere for short stretches of time. A correlative measurement team was assembled to provide the National Aeronautics and Space Administration with the findings of their CO field measurement experiments conducted during the shuttle missions' April and October missions.
