Abstract Abstract: The aim of this paper is to demonstrate that radiation responses across cancer cell lines of the same anatomic site and histologic type varies significantly for protons and carbon ions. Prior to radiation, we also treated cancer cell lines with DNA repair inhibitors to see how DNA repair capacity could influence response variability. The relative range of D 10% for lung cancer cell lines varied from 55-92% for photons, protons, and C-ions, with the relative range in RBE ranging from 16-30 percent for protons and C-ions. The relative range of D 10% for brain and pancreatic cancer cell lines varied from 95-112% to 39-75%, respectively, with the relative range in RBE varying from 27-33% to 25-50%. The COVs in the D 10 were also higher for the cell lines treated with DNA repair inhibitors, ranging from 0. 34–0. 41:0. 06.
