Sugarcane spirit is a drink that is recognized as a national emblem of Brazil. At high concentrations in beverages, the copper originating from the home-distillers can cause serious human health problems. The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of the activated carbon used in commercial filters on the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of aged sugarcane spirit. Seven highly selected trained judges evaluated the yellow color, woody aroma and flavor, as well as the degree of alcohol presence and flavor of the cane spirit before and after the separation process, providing evidence of sensory analysis. The sensory experiments were carried out using a 9 cm non-structured intensity scale. According to the sensory results obtained, a decrease was observed in the intensity of the yellow color, aroma, and wood flavor characteristics, the key characteristics of the aging process.

Biological activated carbon filter for greywater post-treatment: Long-term TOC removal with adsorption and biodegradation

Following a membrane bioreactor, biological activated carbon filters can be used to remove residual total organic carbon from greywater. Adsorption to the granular activated carbon and biological degradation are the two key TOC removal steps. Microorganisms grow in the filter bed's filter bed, contributing to increased pressure loss across the filter bed. However, the roles of sorption and biodegradation in long-term TOC removal are unclear, as well as how they complement each other. Following a membrane bioreactor over more than 900 days, we monitored TOC removal from greywater in a BAC filter installed. Removal results depended on the operational time of the BAC filter, the influent TOC concentration, and the filter's upper segment on the empty bed contact time. BAC filters are a cost-effective post-treatment step for the treatment of greywater with high flow and TOC values, according to our analysis.

Influence of intermittent flow on removal of organics in a biological activated carbon filter (BAC) used as post-treatment for greywater

In decentralized greywater treatment, a strong flow must be anticipated, which may result in intermittent operation of the treatment unit. However, no studies have investigated the effect of variable flow on the treatment results of a biological activated carbon filter. In this research, we investigated intermittent flow using small-scale BAC columns, which treat greywater as a second treatment step after a membrane bioreactor. Based on total organic carbon removal, TOC percentages, and growth potential, the BAC filters were assessed. Peaks with high TOC during 24 h periods were delayed by sorption and biological degradation, leading to sorption and biological degradation of Peaks with high TOC during 24-h cycles. Intermittent flow does not negatively influence a BAC's results, and there are no need for additional equalization tanks to buffer the variable flow, as in household-scale greywater treatment.

Entropy, enthalpy, and gibbs free energy variations of 133Cs via CO2-activated carbon filter and ferric ferrocyanide hybrid composites

The addition of ferric ferrocyanide to adsorbents could increase 133Cs' adsorption results. We present a heterogeneously integrated carbonaceous material platform containing PB in direct contact with CO2-activated carbon filters aimed at achieving this target. In comparison to specific surface characteristics, we should note that the amount of PB was expected to be the determining factor in 133Cs adsorption. Positive results of u0394Ho and u0394So indicate the endothermic's behaviour and increased randomness. Our research will be of concern to the relevant academia for collecting radionuclides in a safe manner given the assumption of capture hazardous materials by hazardous substances.
