While these CO 2 sources drew a lot of attention, processes that reduce the amount of CO 2 have been less investigated. During phytoplankton blooms, we therefore investigated the CO 2 reduction capacity during times of phytoplankton blooms. Even amid blooms, our results revealed that p CO 2 and phytoplankton densities remained unrelated in the two lakes. These findings advance our understanding of carbon cycling in lakes and emphasize the importance of detailed lake studies for more precise estimates of local, regional, and global carbon budgets.
