We note that chemical vapor deposition using metal cluster nanoparticle catalysts is commonly used to synthesize carbon nanotubes, with oxygen-containing species such as water or alcohol included in the feedstock for improved yield. Using CNT cap models, we investigated how water-based etchant radicals could increase chiral selectivity during CVD growth. Using density functional theory, the reactivities of the caps with the etchant radicals were determined.
