Functional Neuroimaging in Irritable Bowel Syndrome: A Systematic Review Highlights Common Brain Alterations With Functional Movement Disorders.

Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic medical disorder characterized by abdominal pains and changed bowel habits without having detectable organic causes. In particular, this research intends to give a complete review of the literature on functional neuroimaging in IBS and to highlight brain changes in IBS in terms of other health conditions - functional movement disorders. These alterations seem to be very similar to those found in patients with functional mobility disorders. Hence, we speculate that different functional disturbances could influence a common pathophysiology, as well as our discussion of our findings in the light of a Bayesian model framework.
