Both bone morphogenic protein-2 and basic fibroblast growth factor, u03b23, generated more chondrogenic constructs in the presence of dexamethasone and transforming growth factor-u03b23, however BMP-2 was required to achieve histologic characteristics of chondrocytes. The 3D, serum-free, Collagen Type-I assay, described herein, was useful in determining cMSC differentiation and will be used as a practical device to characterize cMSCs or to produce tissue engineering components for clinical use.
