The blue carbon ecosystem has a strong capacity for carbon sequestration, but its research and development are also uncertain. The results revealed that blue carbon research has proceeded through an early experimental stage based on scientific concept research, a research stage on the carbon sequestration process of the various blue carbon ecosystems, and a blue carbon capture and restoration stage focused on climate change and human activities. From a single ecosystem type to multiple ecosystem types, and from concept identification to system evaluation, Blue carbon research has progressed from concept to system analysis. To protect the integrity of the ecosystem's design and service functions, and contribute to the global carbon neutrality initiative, it is vital to improve the scientific understanding on blue carbon.
