Histologic evaluation in the diagnosis and management of celiac disease: practical challenges, current best practice recommendations and beyond.

Celiac disease is an immunoallergic enteropathy that affects genetically impaired individuals who eat gluten. Despite many practical challenges, histopathologic examination of small intestinal tissue plays a vital role in disease diagnosis and treatment. To maximize patient care, recently published best practice guidelines help to standardize biopsy sample collection, tissue preparation, histology diagnosis, and reporting. Quantitative histopathologic research in CDs depicts a promising future as a result of the introduction of a gradual shift toward digital pathology in routine diagnostic practice.
