SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19's covidial-19 virus, can live for up to three days on plastic and stainless-steel surfaces, two materials that are often used to produce these high-touch surfaces. Ordinary cleaning agent wipes and sprays are quick ways to sanitize such surfaces; however, continual care of high-traffic areas is costly and logistically difficult. Engineers at NASA Marshall Space Flight Center created the Ultraviolet Germicidal Door Handle in reaction to this issue.

NASA Johnson Space Center innovators designed a Pre-Treatment Solution for Water Recovery to expand the amount of potable water recovered from the International Space Station's urine processing system. Three main steps are needed to convert potable water, urine, or seawater into potable water, including 1 pre-treatment, 2 distillation or membrane filtration, and 3 transport and storage of potable water and brine. In addition, the solution contains a biocide to slow bacteria growth, thus increasing storage time and the amount of water recovered.
