Climate measures aimed at reducing fossil-fuel CO 2 pollution can also greatly improve air quality and public health, as well as clean air policies that target pollution reduction. In China, there has been no comprehensive study of public health outcomes as a result of various energy pathways and local clean air management decisions. Future Chinese air quality in scenarios spanning a range of global climate goals as well as national clean air initiatives can be estimated using a China-focused integrated assessment system and a dynamic emission projection model. Despite stricter air regulations and air quality improvements, we find that Chinese deaths related to PM2. 5 air pollution do not significantly reduce—and often increase—by mid-century, with no effective climate control or air quality improvements.
