Risk Factors Associated with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: Exposure to Cigarette Smoke and Air Pollution from Pregnancy to Disease Diagnosis

This is an exploratory case-control study involving 66 patients with JIA and 124 healthy controls matched by age and sex, who lived in the Su00e3o Paulo, Brazil, metropolitan area before JIA diagnosis and whose mothers had lived in this area during pregnancy. JIA diagnosis was attributed to several risk factors during pregnancy, intrauterine cigarette smoking use, and maternal occupational exposure. In contrast, maternal education and ideal maternal weight gain showed negative results. The pathogenesis of JIA was caused by two distinct risk factors, from birth to JIA diagnosis and exposure to O3 during the second year of life. In our research, cigarette smoking use, O 3 exposure in the second year of life, and maternal occupational exposure were all found as potential risk factors for JIA, requiring further investigation.

According to two-stage least squares estimates, the migration consequences of sever air pollution still holds. Estimating the Local Air Pollution Impacts of Maritime Traffic: A Principled Approach for Observational Data

When natural or policy experiments are not available, we suggest a new method to determine the causal consequences of maritime traffic. We design hypothetical random experiments to determine the change in local air pollution triggered by a short-term increase in cruise traffic using a new matching algorithm created for time series results. In addition, our procedure also helps identify in a more standardized way the identification challenges specific to this type of high-frequency time series data.
