The relation between surgical approaches for pelvic ring and acetabular fractures and postoperative complications: a systematic review

Introduction Although several papers mention complications following pelvic ring and acetabular fracture surgery, a general summary of complication rates and potential risk factors is lacking, a few articles discuss risk factors. The current research gives a detailed summary of the complications related to pelvic ring and acetabular fracture surgery in relation to the surgical approach. 77% for the Stoppa procedure, 11% for percutaneous fixation, 5 for the Kocheru2013Langenbeck strategy, 7% for the ilioinguinal approach, and 31% for external fixation. As risk factors for SSI, two studies reported on risk factors and identified concomitant traumatic injuries, increased ICU stay, and a high body mass index as risk factors for SSI. Conclusion External fixation of pelvic fractures is attributed to the highest incidences of SSIu2019s and neurological disorders. Although post-operative complications are common after pelvic fracture surgery, more research is needed to determine potential risk factors.
