Is acceptance and commitment therapy helpful in reducing anxiety symptomatology in people aged 65 or over? A systematic review

Anxiety-related mental health issues, particularly in the elderly population, pose a health risk. Only psychological therapies to reduce anxiety specific to this group at present. The aim of this research was to conduct a systematic review of the literature to determine the therapeutic effects of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy on anxiety in older adults, using the Preferred Reporting Items for systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses protocol. Both blinded reviewers participated in the research, selection, and methodological quality assessment procedures, with good levels of agreement among reviewers. 348 studies were discovered in the general search. The journals concentrated on samples with a diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder, recommending a variety of assessment tools for related dependent variables, particularly depressive symptoms and psychological flexibility. The findings support the effectiveness of ACT in reducing anxiety and depression in older adults, according to a critical review of the studies.

Methods: The purpose of this investigation was quasi-experimental, with pre-test and observation groups as well as control groups. The study included 30 women who were randomly selected through convenience method sampling and were randomly divided into two groups of control group and experiment group. On the experimental group, eight sessions of acceptance and promise therapy were administered. According to the conclusion, the acceptance and commitment therapy raised the psychological flexibility in the experimental group as compared to the control group that was anxious, depression, and stress, respectively.
