For people with patellofemoral pain, a strengthening of the hip abductors has been advocated. It is unclear if these individuals activate the hip abductor muscles properly in order to achieve the desired therapeutic benefits. Objective To determine the release of the hip abductor muscles between people with and without PFP during hip abductor training. Each muscle's EMG activity was compared between groups of all exercises. PFP participants with PFP and significantly lower EMG activity of SUP-GMAX compared to those without PFP accounted for when averaged across all exercises. Lower EMG activity of GMED was seen in PFP, but only for 3 out of the 11 exercises assessed. Conclusion : Compared to people without PFP, those with PFP demonstrated activation differences during the execution of exercises designed to target the hip abducttors.
