As a way of regulating SARS-CoV-2 transmission within schools with low rates of pupil absences, rapid testing techniques that replace the isolation of close friends through the use of lateral flow device tests has been suggested. Compared to a policy of isolating year group bubbles, a pupil returning a positive polymerase chain reaction test showed the potential effects of a dual school made of exclusive year group bubbles to determine the likely effects of LFTs in secondary schools over a seven-week cycle for monitoring turnover, absences, and testing number over the course of a seven-week half-term. Although repeated testing of year group bubbles following case detection is less effective at reducing infections than a scheme of isolating year group bubbles, year-group bubbles' isolating year group bubbles, two-week mass testing can reduce infections to lower levels than those that would be present under year-group isolation. At high rates of student participation in lateral flow testing, experiments that replace year group bubbles with standardized testing significantly reduce absences, but require a large number of testing.
