"Here we're looking at how those energy requirements can be reduced by the application of ultrasound for the activated alumina/water adsorption pair. " To compare ultrasound's energy-saving characteristics, the ultrasound's ultrasonic-power-to-total power ratios of 0. 2, 0. 25, 0. 4, and 0. 5 were investigated, comparing the results to those of no ultrasound at the same total input power. To determine the effect of frequency on regeneration dynamics, three nominal frequencies of 28, 40, and 80 kHz were carried out by duplicate experiments. A novel ultrasound-enhanced desorption mechanism involving adsorbate surface energy is introduced, based on the variations of desorption times with ultrasonic power and frequency, and a relationship between acoustically induced strain and adsorbate surface energy is suggested.

"Fluorination reactions with alumina have been investigated because fluorine is abundant in binder formulations that commonly surround aluminum particles in an energetic mixture. " However, iodine gas has emerged as an alternative halogenated-based binder or oxidizer, as a result of chemical neutralization of biological agents or sterilization of polluted environments. Relative to fluorinated fragments such as HF and F, the adsorption energies used with HI and I, are nearly triple the exchange reaction energy available from fluorination reactions with alumina. These results indicate that alumina surface exothermic reactions with iodine are more effective than with fluorine fragments due to adsorption. The solution would convert alumina with alternative passivation shell chemistry, as well as generating hydroxyl complexes and iodinated species synthesized on the surface of the particle.
