Autophagosomes fuse to phagosomes and facilitate the degradation of apoptotic cells in Caenorhabditis elegans

"Abstract Autophagosomes are two-membrane intracellular organelles that degrade protein aggregates, intracellular organelles, and other cellular constituents of human cells. Many somatic and germ cells undergo apoptosis during the course of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans' development. Specifically, the double-membrane autophagosomes in engulfing cells are attached to the surfaces of phagosomes that contain apoptotic cells and subsequently fuse to phagosomes, allowing the inner vesicle to enter the phagosome lumen. Our results show that, unlike the single-membrane vesicles isolated for mammalian phagocytes, the canonical double-membrane autophagosomes promote the removal of C. elegans apoptotic cells. These reports include autophagosomes, identify novel crosstalk between the autophagy and phagosome maturation pathways, and identify the upstream signaling molecules that spark this crosstalk.
