Ascorbic acid present in pharmacologic solutions may have unanticipated role in cancer therapy. Cell death in ten cancer and four other cell types was determined by using 1-h exposures. Cell death was unrelated of metal chelators and indisputably dependent on H 2 O 2 formation. Cell death from H2 O 2 addition to cells was similar to that found when H2 O 2 was produced by ascorbate therapy. Although ancorbate addition to medium produced H 2 O 2, ascorbate addition to blood did not produce any detectable H 2 O 2 and only traceable ascorbate radicals, ascorbate radicals only has traceable ascorbate radicals. The blood may be a delivery system of the pro-drug to tissues, and it may be a pro-drug for the formation of H 2 O 2. Ascorbic acid is used in cancer therapy, and can have unexpected consequences for treating infections in which H 2 O 2 may be helpful.
