Semantics of European poetry is shaped by conservative forces: The relationship between poetic meter and meaning in accentual-syllabic verse

Long-term changes in artistic works' characteristics appear gradually, according to recent advancements in cultural analysis and large-scale computational studies of art, literature, and film. We present the first comprehensive academic evidence pointing to the connection between poetic meter and semantics in 18-19th-century European literatures, including Czech, German, and Russian collections, as well as additional information from English poetry and early modern Dutch songs to this end. In addition, this report indicates that the link between form and meaning will continue to diminish as time goes. This paper argues that distinct metrical styles, which are often copied in a language for decades, also hold long-term semantic inertia in poetry. Our results reveal the role of formal characteristics of cultural items in influencing culture's speed and shape of cultural change.
